Fresh Dates are a staple in the Ayurdevic diet, as they are Sattvic (promoting peace & contentment in the mind) and known to nourish Ojas (the essence of our immune system).
Rich in antioxidants, potassium, magnesium, iron, Vitamin B6 & dietary fiber, dates are said to promote overall good health & digestion. Deeply nourishing to the tissues and immune system they are used as medicine in depleted plasma tissue (rasa dhatu) conditions. Commonly used to to treat low libido or infertility & to nourish & invigorate sexual reproductive tissues, dates are also said to contain phyto-hormones that resemble oxytocin, the 'love & wellbeing’ horomone. While balancing for Vata & Pitta, dates should still be taken in moderation by all, but particularly Kapha due to their heavy, sweet nature. One of of favorite ways to use dates is in this simple and oh so delicious recipe. These stuffed dates are the perfect sweet treats to have on hand in the freezer for those days you are craving something sweet & want to nourish. While many of the ingredients are tridoshic (good for all) I included the doshas each ingredient is best for in the event you want to customize them to the dosha needing balance. If that means nothing to you, simply ignore, or contact me for an Ayurvedic consultation to determine your constitution.
Ingredients 12 Medjool Dates (V, P) 1/4 cup Nut Butter of choice (Almond Butter best for all doshas) Optional Toppings Hemp Hearts (V, P) Chia Seeds (V, P, K) Coconut Flakes (V, P) Pumpkin Seeds (V, P, K) Flax Seeds (V, P, K) Topped with 3 oz Unsweetened Chocolate 2 tbsp Maple Syrup (V, P) OR Honey (K)
Plus
Optional Spices of choice 1/4 tsp Cardamom (V, P, K) 1/4 tsp Cinnamon (V, P, K) 1/4 tsp Turmeric (V, P, K) Directions 1) Slice medjool dates down the middle but not all the way through to allow for filling. 2) Stuff them with nut butter of choice and sprinkle with desired optional toppings. I find 1-2 toppings work best to not overload digestive system. 3) Over low heat melt unsweetened chocolate & spices of choice in double boiler or in chocolate melting pan. Remove from heat & add sweetener of choice. 4) Drizzle melted chocolate over stuffed dates & sprinkle with sea salt if desired. 5) Freeze and enjoy in moderation anytime you need a little boost. :)
